{In Kiswahili, Guard is Askari}

The men who guard my school are kind men.
They have wide smiles and gentle laughs.

I wonder how fierce they might be if someone
were to come with hate in their hearts.
Would their faces then be hard?
Are they pushed by duty, dignity, or affection?
I wonder if it matters.

For now, I smile back, wave, thank
God for their kindness.
